For she’s a jolly good fellow… and so says none of us

You know what’s crazy? What’s crazy is that I have about 8 drafts lined up, all worthy contenders for today’s blog post but you know what I’m doing instead? I’m writing off the top of my head because… because nothing in the drafts feel right. And I’d rather freestyle (hoping it’ll come out right), than publish something that doesn’t feel right.

Disclaimer: You will not agree with everything you’re about to read, and that is perfectly okay.

We’re not here to talk about drafts or why I’m writing off the top off my head. As a matter of fact, we’re not talking at all; I’m struggling to make this make sense and you’re probably wondering why you’re still reading this.

Well, here goes nothing.

I started this blog – again – in June 2020, during the quarantine season. It seemed like a pretty good idea and it felt like home to me. I had all the time to write and I posted everyday. Then things started going bad for Seitti (the name I just came up with to qualify my writing talent – don’t blame me, I don’t exactly feel very sane these days.) I stopped writing as much, I kinda abandoned Seitti and whatever guilt plagued me whenever I saw my redundant website link on my Whatsapp bio, I quickly sent packing by drowning in my Instagram feed. Thank you Tik Tok! 😁

Once you make up your mind to do something, you owe it to yourself to see it through, independent of any external motivation or encouragement.

Things went on like this for a while, until early this year. I decided that I would post at least once a week on my blog. I mean, this blog isn’t exactly free!
Once a week seemed easy enough, right? Until school started and I could barely find my feet on the ground. But I did it and about two weeks ago, I decided to challenge myself by upping it to at least two posts a week (I used a cheat though, on Fridays I’ll publish stories I’d pre-written so that didn’t really involve heavy lifting writing.) Right.

How hard is it to be consistent? Maybe not very hard but definitely not that easy, and I say this from experience. But the truth is, you won’t go very far without the discipline you get from consistency. It’s a NEED.

So what’s the point of all these then? You ask. Well, the point is CONSISTENCY. What I am trying to be is consistent, no matter how tired I am. No matter how stressed from school or my project. No matter how drained I feel. As a matter of fact, I’m currently writing this post in between making jollof rice for Amanda (so she doesn’t behead me, of course) right after coming back from three hours of tedious classes and figuring out what Whatsapp work message to attend to first. But I am doing it. 😫

Consistency of performance is essential. You don’t have to be exceptional every week but as a minimum you need to be at a level that even on a bad day you get points on the board.

So you see? I wouldn’t pick this post if I had one chance to show off my fine writing skills but at least I have scored points on the board. Khloe Kardashian said:

We all have to start somewhere, and doing something is better than nothing at all. Start small so you don’t get discouraged and give up. Remember it is all about consistency.

And I agree with her. If I don’t post twice a week like I said I would, it affects my discipline. That’s how it is when you postpone stuff or decide not to do stuff because it doesn’t feel good enough or you don’t feel good enough. Then all of a sudden, I haven’t written in two months. 😮

Dress up and show up (although I’m not exactly dressed up right now) but you get what I mean 😁. Show up and do what you can. It might not be your best but at least you’ll score points on the board. Even if it ends up counting for nothing (which it will not), at least it encourages you to do better next time.

You know the part in the Bible that talks about loving your enemies as being the extraordinary stuff because anyone can love their friends so that’s basic? (Matthew 5:44, 46 & 47). In the same way, showing up when you don’t feel like it is what is extraordinary, because anyone can show up when they feel good, excited, motivated.

So you should show up, no matter what. If you’ve been struggling with something, maybe the consistency is what’s missing. Don’t wait to be motivated before you do that thing you want to do, start doing it and watch motivation run to you. 🏃‍♀️💨

Whew! I had zero idea I’d write this or even write this much because I just wanted to make a blog post and here I am, encouraging you to be consistent, no matter what. I really hope you took something away from this. 😅

One last quote…

One things guys have to remember is consistency… You can’t make up for three years of eating poorly in just one workout.

P.S – Wait wait wait! You’re probably wondering what’s the correlation between the post title and the post itself. The answer is none, but who I am to say no to inspiration? 😉
